Circles! Many of us learned in Geometry class that although these one-sided geometric shapes were a bit more complicated than we imagined, they possessed a beauty in the pureness of their proportions and dimensions. We witness the effectiveness of the circle throughout the world in so many objects we see in everyday life. In the context of furniture design, the circle has had great success when employed as the basis for table design… Remember the fictional story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table ? This story tells of how a round table commissioned by King Arthur enabled his knights to consider themselves equal; no one knight was more important than the other, especially while seated at that table. However, not many people realize that this tale dates back to the mid 12th century, proving that smart design never goes out of style!

Functionality

Fast forward almost 900 years, and the circle still sees a tremendous amount of use serving as the basis for table design. With that in mind, round dining tables remain very popular due to their inherently space-saving nature, many of which are between 48” and 60” in diameter. As evidenced by their use of pedestal bases, these tables typically take up less (actual) floor space when compared to their square or rectangular counterparts. As a result, round tables, especially larger sets at least 60” in diameter, can help maintain an intimate gathering while easily accommodating anywhere between six to eight people (which may require the purchase of additional chairs).

Material

Wood is a term that is synonymous with furniture. As a result, this versatile material will continue to be the basis of quality furniture as long as there are trees on Earth. Many types of wood are used in the construction of furniture, but oak and pine are two of the most common for cost and availability reasons (finishes vary by set). Round glass tops (over metal or wood bases) are also popular decorating options because their general design makes for a clean and casual setting in which to impress your guests!

While dining room tables come in a variety of shapes, it is important to remember that the physical dimensions of the dining area, along with structural considerations, such as load-bearing walls, may dictate your final decision. Additionally, keep in mind that decorating of any sort is a very personal expression of your tastes and interests. While being unique is part of the fun, there is a lot to be said for versatility, so choose wisely... King Arthur and his knights would most certainly agree with that.
