7 Tips for Setting the Table for Your Valentine

Posted by RSO on 8th Feb 2016

As we know, the pros stay home on Valentine's Day. But aside from cooking something special, how do you make your dinner for two more romantic? Start with a round dining table and you’re on your way to creating the perfect ambiance. Next, add a little effort and creativity to your table setting for a Valentine’s Day to remember.

No, you don't have to go overboard with decorating the dining table set with loads of hearts and red and pink (but if you want to, today's the day!). Here are 7 sweet ways to make your Valentine's Day table show your significant other just how much you care.

1- Keep it Simple With Red & White

Start with a white base and build from there. A white tablecloth, white plates, red napkins with pearl napkin rings, red accented flatware and a single red rose. Now there’s a recipe for romance.

2- Pretty in Pink

Alternating fuchsia pink and pale pink throughout your table ensures a sweet table setting . . . but not bubblegum sweet. Start with a white or pale pink tablecloth, add a fuchsia pink table runner, a bouquet of pink roses, white plates and white napkins tied with a fuchsia ribbon.

3- A Touch of Spring

Just because it’s Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you have to have a massive bouquet of roses. Opt for simple arrangements as a reminder that spring is around the corner. Tulips, sunflowers, Gerber daisies, and fresh lavender are all great choices. You can also use fresh cut greens such as lemon leaves in unexpected places such as tucked into a napkin or under a plate.

4- Neutralize It

No matter if you are planning for a more casual setting utilizing your kitchen dining table or something more formal with a round dining table, stick to a few colors. Start with a neutral backdrop; you can then use one accent color that can be accented in the napkins, wine glasses, tea lights, or flowers.

5- Mood Lighting

Besides music, dimming the lights goes a long way to creating a romantic ambiance. Consider adding a dimmer switch to your dining room if you don’t already have one. And of course no Valentine’s Day would be complete without candlelight. For a more traditional table setting, opt for taper candles. For a more casual or playful table setting, use several tea lights in colored glass holders coordinated with your choice of table setting colors.

6- Say it With a Gift

Start the evening with a gift. Let a small gift-box be the centerpiece to your table setting by wrapping it with a simple bow and setting it on a napkin atop a beautiful plate.

7- Sweet Ending

Whatever colors you choose for your table setting, end the evening with a color coordinated sweet ending. A pink teacup filled with chocolate mousse, a plate of French macaroons in several colors arranged in the shape of a heart or a simple box of chocolates tied with a ribbon.
