Bunk Beds vs. Twin Beds

Whether you subscribe to the following philosophy or not, many of us are familiar with the lore of living the “American Dream” as coined in 1931 by James Truslow Adams in his book, The Epic of America. This phrase evolved during the prosperity of the 1950’s to commonly refer to two individuals owning a home, living well, and raising a family. Despite some global economic setbacks since then, this philosophy stands strong today. We still strive to own homes, ideally featuring a bedroom for each child. While this approach works for a majority of American families, some of us live in areas where buying a large home with 4 or 5 bedrooms is not feasible from a cost standpoint. Maybe a smaller home appeals to many for environmental or logistical reasons. Or, perhaps, a family simply feels there is no shame in having their children share rooms, regardless of home size.

When buying bedroom furniture for your children, two of the most common bedding options are Bunk Beds and Twin Beds. For generations, both have become synonymous with the American household, and they will continue to do so well into the future because each may feature a wide range of versatile design features that grow with your children. Consider too, the job furniture designers have at finding new and innovative ways to maximize utility without taking up a lot of floor space!

The most obvious difference between the two bedding styles is that a bunk bed features stacked beds, whereas Twin Beds are just single units. Bunk Beds are the most practical, space-saving solution if children will be sharing a bedroom, especially if floor space is at a minimum. They are also more fun as children enjoy climbing the ladder, playing games, etc. They are generally made of two materials, wood or metal, and come in different styles such as Country/Cottage, traditional, and modern. They also come in many colors and price ranges. When paired with the optional Under-Bed Storage Drawers and 4-Drawer Chest, the set is sure to become the focal point of your child’s bedroom!

However, a traditional Twin Bed is not without its merits as well. There are many types of Twins, some offer a trundle bed, which is perfect for accommodating sleepovers with cousins or friends, while others feature a useful bookcase integrated into the headboard.

You always have the option of adding a matching nightstand and chest of drawers to increase the versatility of your purchase. For those on a budget, a twin bed with storage drawers can solve the problem.

Ultimately, you can't go wrong with either choice when selecting bedding options for your children. Today's beds are feature-rich and many have the ability to expand with your family to meet its needs. Just be sure to make a selection soon, because kids grow up fast, and before you know it, they'll be moving out. Another generation pursuing its own "American Dream".
